  13. NOTE ** The Homasote Company manufactures various products
  14.         for the building industry.  This section covers
  15.         only a part of their product line:  "N.C.F.R.(R)
  16.         Homasote" and "N.C.F.R.(R) Wall Shield" are Class A
  17.         fire-rated panels used for sound-deadening and
  18.         tackable applications where fire ratings are
  19.         important.  These products are made from 100
  20.         percent recycled, all wood fiber material
  21.         completely impregnated with fire retardant chemical
  22.         ingredients, treated to resist moisture, termites,
  23.         and fungi, and compressed into high density,
  24.         structural exterior building board.  The resulting
  25.         product contain no asbestos or urea formaldehyde
  26.         additives and offer constant insulation against
  27.         air, moisture, and noise penetration.

  234. PART 3  EXECUTION
  235.  
  236. 3.1 EXAMINATION
  237.  
  238.     A.  Examine substrates upon which work will be installed.
  239. NOTE ** Delete the following paragraph if panels are
  240.         applied only as carpet underlayment.
  241. NOTE **
  242. NOTE ** To prevent condensation damage within walls, it is
  243.         good building practice to install a vapor retarder
  244.         in buildings where the January temperature falls
  245.         below 40 degrees F (4.5 degrees C).
  246.  
  247.     B.  Verify framing member spacing complies with
  248.         manufacturer's requirements depending on substrates and
  249.         installation methods.
  250.  
  251.     C.  Verify environmental conditions are, and will continue to
  252.         be, maintained in accordance with manufacturer's
  253.         recommendations.
  254.  
  255.     D.  Coordinate with responsible entity to perform corrective
  256.         work on unsatisfactory substrates or conditions.
  257.  
  258.     E.  Starting work by installer is acceptance of substrate and
  259.         environmental conditions.
  260.  
  261. 3.2 PREPARATION
  262.  
  263.     A.  Follow manufacturer's instructions by separating and
  264.         allowing panels to be exposed to environmental
  265.         temperature and humidity conditions for not less than 24
  266.         hours before start of installation.
  267.  
  268.     B.  Precondition panels larger than 4 by 8 feet (1.219 by
  269.         2.438 m) panels by sprinkling with water and stacking wet
  270.         side up overnight.
  271.  
  272. 3.3 INSTALLATION
  273.  
  274. NOTE ** Homasote requires wall framing at 16 inches (400
  275.         mm) o.c. for 1/2 inch (13 mm) boards.  Edges and
  276.         ends are required to align with framing members or
  277.         be blocked for all methods.  Verify that
  278.         appropriate framing section or drawing notes
  279.         comply.
  280.  
  281.     A.  Follow manufacturer's instructions for cutting and
  282.         installation of fire rated panels.
  283.  
  284.     B.  Install panels in dry condition only.
  285. NOTE ** Select applications from paragraphs below.
  286. NOTE **
  287. NOTE ** Any wood or hardboard finish paneling, or metal or
  288.         vinyl siding applied over N.C.F.R.(R) Homasote must
  289.         be installed with nails of sufficient length to
  290.         penetrate Homasote and anchor into framing 1 inch
  291.         (25 mm) minimum.
  292. NOTE **
  293. NOTE ** Any component added to or structurally combined
  294.         with N.C.F.R.(R) Homasote when used as siding,
  295.         paneling, or underlayment, must be Fire Hazard
  296.         Classification to maintain continuity.
  297.  
  298.     C.  N.C.F.R.(R) Homasote Exterior Applications:
  299.         1.  Apply panels over wood sheathing or direct to framing
  300.             by glue-nailing or with nails only.
  301.         2.  Allow 3/16 inch (4.7 mm) gap at exposed joints, seal
  302.             with calking, and cover with battens.
  303.  
  304.     D.  N.C.F.R.(R) Homasote Interior Applications:
  305.         1.  Apply panels direct to framing or solid furring by
  306.             glue-nailing or with nails only.
  307.         2.  Apply panels to old masonry walls by glue-nailing,
  308.             provided walls are flat and solid.
  309.         3.  Allow 3/16 inch (4.7 mm) gap at butt joints, 3/8 inch
  310.             (9.5 mm) gap at floor, ceiling, and abutting framing.
  311.  
  312.     E.  N.C.F.R.(R) Homasote Underlayment Applications on Wood
  313.         Sub-Flooring:
  314.  
  315. NOTE ** Where used as underlayment, fire rating can be
  316.         maintained only when fire rated carpet and pad are
  317.         used.
  318. NOTE **
  319. NOTE ** Sub-floor must be flat (not cupped), dry, level,
  320.         and securely fastened to joists.
  321.         1.  Shim or sand sub-floor as necessary to provide a flat
  322.             surface continuity for panels.
  323.         2.  Apply underlayment panels with APA approved decking
  324.             adhesive and nails, or with nails only.
  325.         3.  Allow 3/16 inch (4.7 mm) gap at abutting edges; 3/8
  326.             inch (9.5 mm) space at walls and partitions.
  327. NOTE ** N.C.F.R.(R) Wall Shield is for use with UL listed
  328.         solid-fuel type room heaters and listed fireplace
  329.         stoves in residential type structures.  It is
  330.         approved for use with vertical flue installations
  331.         only, not for use where flue passes through panels.
  332.  
  333.     F.  N.C.F.R.(R) Wall Shield Applications:
  334. NOTE ** Locations and attachment of non-combustible spacers
  335.         and method of application of panels depends on type
  336.         of finish to be used on panel face.  Consult
  337.         manufacturer's recommendations.
  338.         1.  Space panels 1 inch (25 mm) from wall with non-
  339.             combustible spacers attached to wall and spaced as
  340.             recommended by panel manufacturer.
  341.         2.  Space panels 1 inch (25 mm) minimum and 3 inches (75
  342.             mm) maximum above floor and below ceiling.
  343.         3.  Extend panels 8 inches (203 mm) minimum each side of
  344.             projected area of back of stove or flue.
  345.  
  346. 3.4 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
  347.  
  348.     A.  Follow manufacturer's instructions for repairing damaged
  349.         panels.
  350.  
  351.     B.  Replace panels that cannot be repaired to "as new"
  352.         condition.
